Kruger Park

The climate is much more tolerable in the dry winter months of June, July and August. Then the days are mild and the nights a little cool. This time of the year is also ideal for animal viewing in the Kruger National Park, because the shrubs and trees don't have so many leaves to obstruct the view. Since it hardly ever rains in winter, the game must come to the waterholes to drink in the mornings and afternoons and can easily be observed from the car.

Whales at Hermanus

The whales start arriving in May in order to calve and to mate in the shallow water. Peak time for whales at any one time is October, but many can still be seen in November, tailing off in December.

All year round we often encounter Dolphins, Humpback whales and Brydes whales. From July to November the Southern Right whales are plentiful in the bay and you can be assured of a sighting.

Penguins

You can see penguins all year around but it is best when the sun shines between December and June.

White Shark

During the winter months the Great White Sharks are extremely active around the island and we enjoy many sightings and often witness natural predations.

The main breeding season for the Cape Fur Seal is November and December when almost 20 000 pups are born.

Summary

July/August seems to be a good time to travel. Come back in August just before the festival starts in Gothenburg. But it is cold if you plan to use a tent in Kruger Park. Therefore it is probably better to go in September.

Highlights

Look for whales from Walker Cliffs at Hermanus.

http://www.hermanus.com/whalewatching.mv

Visit Boulders Beach and look at the penguins.

White shark tour from Mossel Bay. Watch when they feed white sharks.

Take a speedboat from Simons Town to False Bay and Seal Island. If you are lucky you will see a big white shark jumping up in the air trying to catch a seal.

During the winter months the Great White Sharks are extremely active around the island and we enjoy many sightings and often witness natural predations.

The main breeding season for the Cape Fur Seal is November and December when almost 20 000 pups are born.

Kruger National Park

The park is 350 km long and averages about 65 km across. Southern Kruger is the most popular section of the park, with the highest animal concentration and the easiest access.

There are a lot of private lodges which like to call themselves 'game reserves' but they are simply lodges inside of a designated wildlife reserve with directly border to Kruker Park with no fences. The lodges are for those who want to experience the bush in the lap of luxury with all inclusive. The wildlife-watching is comparable to what you will experience in the park. They are however allowed to drive closer to the animals so you will get a closer look. Travel Help is specialized on budget travels and will therefore use the rest camps.

You can stay in the park for a maximum of 10 days, and at any one rest camp for five days (10 days if you are camping ). Avoid weekends and school holidays.

The gates and the camps are open around 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. The camps are fenced and you can get fined if you arrive late.

Most visitors drive themselves around the park, and this is a good way to experience Kruger. You are however not allowed to leave the major roads. Better than the drives are guided morning and afternoon bush walks. They also have wilderness walkings which last two days and three nights and wildlife drives.

You have to book the rest camps in advance where you will stay. You have to show where you stay when you enter the park.

114 different kinds of reptiles have been found in the park.

There are 12 rest camps in the Kruger Park. We will visit five of them. A round tour from airport to all of the camps is about 300 km long. Add at most three hours driving, max 50 km/h, each day which will be an additional 1500 km during 10 days. It will totally be 1800 km.

Travel route alternatives

1. Kruger Park + Port Elizabeth to Cape Town

2. Kruger Park + Cape Town to Port Elizabeth

3. Port Elizabeth to Cape Town + Kruger Park

4. Kruger Park + Cape Town to Port Elizabeth + Kruger Park

It is best to end the holiday with shopping and it is also a good idea to spend the last days close to a suitable airport. The first alternative therefore seems to be best.
