Preface

The Amazon is more famous but Pantanal is a better place to see wildlife. The world’s largest wetland is 20 times the size of Everglade in Florida. Most of the Pantanal is privately owned. Although 'pantano' means 'swamp' in Spanish, the Pantanal is not a swamp. It is a periodically flooded plain. The wet season is from November to March. The water reaches their high mark, up to 3 meters, in January or February, then start to recede in March.

The Pantanal is the last great stronghold for the biggest and most elusive of the American cats. Hunting is not allowed. The dry season is the cooler season. Bring attire suitable for hot days, cold nights, rain and mosquitoes. Mosquito relief means long pants and long-sleeved shirts, vitamin B12 and insect repellent.

The Swedish film-maker and photographer Arne Sucksdorff is considered the pioneer of ecotourism in the Pantanal. 300 mm camera lens is about right for wildlife.

There is no malaria in the Pantanal, but dengue fever with more than 55,000 documented cases in the first four months of 2007 alone.

There are three main approach routes to the Pantanal, via Cuiabá in Mato Grosso and via Corumbá or Campo Grande in Mato Grosso do Sul. Only the Transpantaneira in Mato Grosso and Estrada Parque in Mato Grosso do Sul go deep into the region.

Cuiabá

It is almost always cheaper to use a tour operator since transportation in and out is then included and they often have access to more remote lodges.

Guides in Cuiabá tend to be more professional. Tours are well-organized and quite comfortable.

Campo Grande

The city has 734 thousand citizens. There is not much to see in the city itself but it is a lively place, especially at night.

All the budget tour operators operating in Mato Grosso do Sul offer similar packages at camps along Estrada Parque, a 117 km stretch of dirt road through the region known as  Nhecolandia. It starts 324 km from Campo Grande.

To get to the Estrada Parque you can take the Campo Grande - Corumbá bus and arrange for your lodge to pick you up for a small fee by the Posto Florestal guard station at the Buraco das Piranhas intersection.

There are frequent buses to Corumbá. Nine daily which takes six hours for R$69. One is direct. Nondirect buses to Corumbá stop in Miranda and Aquidauana, and can drop you at the intersection with Estrada Parque.

Regular buses make the trip to Cuiabá from Campo Grande. Nine daily which takes 10 hours for R$46.

If you also plan to visit Bonito, it's best to go to the Pantanal first as the tours end in Buraco das Piranhas which is much closer to Bonito than Campo Grande.

Bonito

The nature of the area is spectacular.

There is a natural swimming pool with clear water and lots of fish on the Rio Formoso.

A man tries to change the world's opinion of snakes.

Only one bus company serves Bonito, Cruzeiro do Sul. There are buses to Bonito from Campo Grande. Six daily which takes five hours for R$47 and six in the other direction.

Unfortunately many of Bonito's attractions are quite a bit from town and there is no public transportation. Tours booked with travel agencies in Bonito don't include transport.

Go during the dry season, April/May to September/October. In September and October, the driest two months, the chances for spotting jaguar rise dramatically.

Flights, airports & airport transfers

There are direct flights to Cuiabá and Campo Grande from Brasilia. TAM is the only major Brazilian airline connecting other capitals, including Campo Grande.

The cheapest flights are on Wednesdays between Sweden and Brazil. Check prices during September and October. Use www.reseguiden.se where you can get the below result displayed.

Travel route alternatives

It is nice to combine tours to both Pantanal and Bonito which can be done if you go to Campo Grande.

You probably don’t want to spend a night in Brasilia. You will arrive late in the evening if you take the cheapest flights. It will then be difficult to continue to Campo Grande the same day. It is therefore better to start the journey in Natal before visiting Pantanal and Bonito. Finish the journey by relaxing some nights in Campo Grande before going home.

TravelPlan
