The Yucatan is a rather safe place to be unless there is a hurricane. Mexican police patrol all tourist zones and many attractions have their own security.
Always use a hotel safe even if you have to pay a daily charge for it. Store your passport, driver's license any travel documents, jewelry, and cameras and of course credit cards and money.
