New Mexico is not a safe place for tourists travelling alone according to Lonely Planet. You can instead fly directly between Miami and Cancun and also between New York and Cancun.
You spend all your time on the Yucatán peninsula which is safe. Beside snorkeling/diving you also visit some of the Maya ruins. You will make two smaller routs by bus.
During the inland tour you visit the cities Merida and Campeche. You visit the Maya ruins at Chichen Itza and Uxmal.
During the coast tour you travel between Cancun and Tulum. On your way you visit the famous dive and snorkeling island Cozumel. You also visit the "backbacker" island Isla Mujeres where you go by bicycle to the different snorkeling beaches. You also spend some night at Plays del Carmen and visit the Maya ruins at Tulum.
You spend three nights in Miami and three nights in New York.
A flight from Miami to Cancun cost about 700 SEK and takes 40 minutes. You can arrive early in the morning and have time to travel directly to Tulum. There are a lot of flights from Cancun to New York from around 1200 SEK with one stop and less than 2000 SEK directly.

The walk to the ruins is approximately 1 km. There is a little train that transports people back and forth to the ruins all day. Last time we took the train it was $1 USD one way. On a hot day you can save time and energy by taking the train.
Tulum ruins has one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. You can jump in the water at Tulum ruins and swim north to Boca Paila [we have done this]. Even if you are just going to visit the ruins it is still quite an experience to swim out on the ruins beach and see the ruins from the water. On a hot summer day it is a great way to cool off.
Visit craft market.
Snorkeling along the coast here is not that good. Lots of sand and weeds.
We can't say where the best place is to eat in Tulum Pueblo. Personally our favorite is the BBQ Chicken from Dona Rosas.

The ferry docks to Cozumel are located close to the bus station. 5th Avenue, Quinto Avenida, is the main street that runs parallel to the ocean. It's around 500 meters from the water.
The ferry dock in Playa del Carmen is located on Calle 1 Sur, east of 5th Avenue.
Ferry: Playa del Carmen => Island Cozumel
The most common method of transportation to the island is by boat. There is a ferry service that connects Cozumel to Playa del Carmen for pedestrians and a ferry out of Calica for vehicle transportation. The ferry connecting to Playa del Carmen runs quite frequently. There are two separate ferry companies running ferries back and forth from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. One ferry leaves 5 to 10 minutes ahead of the other one. Both ferries are more or less the same in comfort, speed and amenities. It does not matter which ferry you take.
There are a number of different places where you can buy your ferry ticket. There are booths on 5th Ave. and more booths close to the docks. To our knowledge the ferries are never completely sold out, except the early morning rides because of workers going to Cozumel, so you can always get a seat.

The island is approximately 48 km long and 16 km wide. It is about 20 km from the mainland, and some 60 km south of Cancun.
Water temperatures range from 25°-28°C throughout the year.
All popular snorkeling beaches have lockers and snorkel equipment for rent.
For snorkelers, there are plenty of places to go off the shore if you have your own gear and a rental car.
Snorkeling trips by boat are available at the lobby of any hotel or the ferry docks.
Snorkeling Cozumel is a lot differnet than snorkeling the mainland. In many locations on Cozumel as soon as you go out a few yards you are in deep water, but the visibility is good.
The fish are bigger too. Many species of fish you see snorkeling the mainland are young and habitate there to avoid larger preditors.
The two most common snorkel spots on the island are Chankanaab and Dzul Ha. Snorkeling quality is the same at both locations. Chankanaab is a eco-park, with all the bells and whistles, to which you have to pay admission. Dzul Ha is a free road-side attraction that you park at and jump in the water.
If you're traveling with your family Chankanaab is recommended as you can spend the whole day there. If you are a couple looking for a cheap snorkel experience go to Dzul Ha.

Along 5th Avenue you will find numerous stores selling interesting items as well as restaurants and hotels. There are clothing stores selling the latest trends from Europe as well as Cuban Cigar and Rum stores. It is a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of a carnival. We have seen live lions, fire breathers, giant boa constrictors and a cavalcade of characters parading down 5th. There are also lots of bars along 5th making it a good place to party. The after hour clubs swing into action after 12:00. These clubs are located on the beach away from the majority of hotels and resorts because of the noise level.

Cancun is Mexico's most visited tourist destination and boasts over twenty-five thousand hotel rooms.
The hotel zone is an island shaped like a 7. It is joined to the mainland on the southern tip by the Punta Nizuc Bridge and the Playa Linda Bridge at the northern end. This 22 km strip of sandy beach is bisected by a long main street named Kukulcan Boulevard.
This is the tourist mecca of Mexico and the Mexican government provides a safe environment for this to flourish. Crime is taken very seriously here. You are indeed safe.

Merida is a safe place to visit and the people are warm and friendly. I asked a friend once about crime in Merida and he simply stated that there was no place to run there. Being such a close-knit society I took it to mean that violent acts of crime are simply not committed here that often because they are more or less one big family.
If you are in relatively good shape and don't mind the heat [it's hot in the summer] then you can walk to almost every attraction if you stay near the downtown main plaza. This is a great way to get to know the city and once you figure out the street [calle] numbering system, getting lost is unlikely.
Visit the Maya ruins at Uxmal (ATS Ruta Puuc bus):
Uxmal is located 50 miles south of Merida. Public transport is very limited in this area in comparison to other regions in Mexico, and most of the buses that pass-by Uxmal are tour groups on the Ruta Puuc. To explore this area independently, it's best to rent a car for your visit.
ATS Ruta Puuc bus: A convenient but brisk way to travel to Uxmal from Mérida is to take the daily Autotransportes del Sur (ATS) Ruta Puuc bus. It departs the 2nd class TAME station (Calle 68, between 70 and 72) at 8:00am and stops for one half hour at Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, Labná, and two hours at Uxmal.
To Mérida: The return bus leaves Uxmal at 2:30pm. Round Trip: MX$148/US$15.
Numerous ATS or CINTLA 2nd class buses depart Merida’s TAME (1 ½ hours, 8 daily, 6:00am to 6:00pm, MX$41/US$4).
From Uxmal to Merida: ATS (5 daily, 9:20am, 12:45, 3:20, 5:50, 8:20pm, MX$41/US$4). Northbound buses stop in front of the Hotel Hacienda Chichen. Buses also continue south on Highway 261 into the state of Campeche. Flag one down on the highway at the intersection with the road leading to the ruins. Travel to the city of Campeche from Uxmal costs MX$91 and takes three hours.
Accommodation: Hostel in Merida
