Kyoto/Osaka ( 2nd of 4 nights, Monday => Tuesday )

Train: Osaka => Kyoto/Kyoto => Osaka

For travel in the Kansai region, a cheaper and almost as fast alternative is the JR shinkaisoku rapid service, which connects to Osaka, Kobe and Himeji at the price of a local train. For a slightly cheaper price you can use the private Hankyu or Keihan lines to Osaka and Kobe, or the Kintetsu line to Nara. The Kansai Thru Pass includes travel on the private lines through to Kyoto, and this may prove cheaper that a JR Pass if you are staying a few days in the area.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hankyu_Railway

The Kyōto Main Line of Hankyu Railway is a railway line which links Umeda Station, northern junction of Osaka and Kawaramachi Station in downtown Kyoto, Japan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keihan_Main_Line

The Keihan Main Line is a railway line of Keihan Electric Railway. The line is between Sanjō Station in Kyoto and Yodoyabashi Station in Osaka.

Umeda Station and Yodoyabashi Station in Osaka is both near to the hostel.

http://wikitravel.org/en/Osaka#By_subway

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JR_Kyoto_Line

The JR Kyoto Line is the common name of a portion of the Tōkaidō Main Line, between Kyoto Station and Osaka Station. You see a map of the Kyoto station area on page 115. Kyoto station is not so close as the other two stations.

A beginner's guide to Train travel in Japan - http://www.seat61.com/Japan.htm

The shinkansen line has the fastest and most frequent rail links. It takes 15 minutes and costs Y2730.

JR shinkaisoku takes 29 minute between Kyoto Station and Osaka / Shin-Osaka Stations and costs Y540.

There are also a couple other lines for around Y400.

First off, be sure to tuck away a few business cards from your hotel or ryokan into your pocket, so that if you get lost you can just show it to a taxi driver or person on the street if you need help getting "home"!

Secondly, having a notepad and pen will aid greatly if a communication problem comes up, because most Japanese can read English better than they understand or speak it. Also, keep in mind that YOUR pronunciation of a particular place or thing may not match the Japanese pronunciation, so writing it down might clarify things!

Thirdly, if you need help, it is generally better to ask a young lady (between 20-40 years old, say), because they will most likely speak English better than older people, or students, and most men (although there ARE exceptions, of course).

Fourthly, keep in mind that trains, buses, subways, etc. are VERY punctual in Japan, so if you have an important train, tour bus, etc. to catch (i.e. to the airport), then by all means do NOT be late, thinking that they will be delayed as in other countries. Rather, make sure to arrive at the station 5-10 minutes early (as most Japanese do), to ensure you get to the right place with enough time to spare. And when riding on a train, be prepared to embark and disembark promptly when it arrives at your station--do NOT wait until it arrives at your station to gather your bags and rush to the doors, or you may find the doors closing before you embark/disembark!
