The airport is 27 km from the centre of town or about 30-60 minutes by car depending on traffic.

 

A train runs every 15 minutes from 6.30am until 10.30 pm, connecting Capital Airport with Line 2 of the underground system at Dongzhimen. Numerous buses also run to and from the airport.

Pudong International Airport handles most international flights and some domestic flights. There are numerous airport buses which take 60-90 minutes to their destinations in Puxi. They go roughly every 30 minutes from 6am to about 9pm. A taxi ride into central Shanghai will cost around Y160 and take about an hour.

 

A taxi from Hongqiao Airport costs around Y230.

 

The fast Maglev train runs from Pudong Airport to its terminal in Pudong in just eight minutes from where you can transfer to the metro (Longyang Rd station). The metro system in Shanghai is a dream.

Xi'an

Before Xi'an Xianyang International Airport was built, Xi'an was served by Xi'an Xiguan Airport (IATA: SIA, ICAO: ZLSN). In 1984, the State Council of the People's Republic of China and Central Military Commission proposed to build a large civil-use airport on the site of Xianyang's airfield. Phase 1 of the airport commenced construction on August 1987, and was finished and opened in September 1, 1991. Xi'an Xiguan Airport closed at the same time.

 

The airport is 47 km from Xi'an city centre. Busses and taxis are available between the airport and Xi'an city centre.

 

Shuttle buses run hourly from 6am to 6pm between the airport and the Melody Hotel. It cost Y26 and it takes around one hour. The bus stops at other hotels on the way. Taxis into the city charge over Y100 on the meter.

Getting around

Train

Trains to Xi'an leaves from the colossal Beijing West train station in the southwest. Access to the station is simple since it is served by its own underground station.

 

The queues at Beijing train station can be overwhelming. A foreigner's ticket office can be found on the 2nd floor. If you can't face the queues, ask your hotel to book your ticket or try one of the train ticket offices around town where you pay a Y5 commission for your ticket.

 

Xi'an

Xi'an's main train station is just outside the northern city walls. It's always busy. Buy your onward tickets as soon as you arrive, as sleeper berths are hard to get. Most hotels and hostels can get you tickets for around Y40 in commission. There is also an Advance Train-Ticket Booking Office in the ICBC bank's south entrance. Otherwise, brave the crowds in the main ticket hall.

 

A ticket to Shanghai costs Y312 and the journey takes 16-21 hours.
