Getting around

Train

Train travel is one of the joys of India. It is safe, comfortable and by far the best way to get around the country. Trains are slow compared to those in the West, so if you are in a hurry, stick to the expresses. The network is extensive, prices are reasonable, and the experience of travelling on an Indian train is a reason to travel all by itself.

Indian Railways is the second largest employer in the world, with staggering 1.6 million workers.

Use Indian Railways website, www.indianrail.gov.in.

For an excellent description of the various train classes se www.seat61.com/India.htm. In all classes, a padlock and a length of chain are useful for securing your luggage to the baggage racks. In sleeper class you have to bring your own bedding. No reservation are required for general, 2nd class, compartments. You can reserve on other classes up to 60 days in advance and reserving well in advance is strongly recommended.

Fares are calculated by distance and class of travel and you can search for exact fares on www.indianrail.gov.in.

Internet bookings are possible on the website www.ircte.co.in and you can choose an e-ticket, or have the tickets sent to you inside India by courier. The website www.seat61.com/India.htm has some excellent advice on online bookings, scroll down to 'How to book from outside India'.

www.indiarail.co.uk

The Indrail Pass, gives unlimited travel on the entire rail network for periods of between 12 hours and 90 days and can be good value if you plan on traveling nearly every day.

1. Start by displaying the map. You need it if you are not going to a major station. Try to find major stations close by which you can use to find train numbers.

2. You can only search for major stations. If you are going from Delhi to Bharatpur you have to use the map to find two important stations on that route, for instance Delhi and Kota. Use the menu "Trains between Imp. Stations" to get a list of trains.

3. Select "Train Schedule" and use the train numbers from your list. Fill in the number and click on the 'Get it'-button. You are now able to see if the train stops at your stations or if it just passes by. Use the menu "Know train number?" at the bottom when you search information for more trains.

4. Use the "Fare" menu at the bottom when you want to get the fare. Have a look at the 'Concession' alternatives just for fun.

The below classes are available. Use the menu 'Class codes' at the bottom to get just a little info.

Bus

Almost every part of the country is connected by an extensive and well-developed bus system with the railway stations being the natural hubs for both local and regional services.

On many routes, even local ones, reservation can be made. Most large baggage is carried on the bus roof.

It is advisable not to use city bus services during rush hour when they become unbearable crowded. In most cities it is generally prefereable to use taxis or three-wheeled "auto-rickshaws".

Taxi

Chauffeur-driven cars, costing about Rs1500-2000 a day, can be arranged through tourist offices, hotels or travel agents.

Charges very, ranging from about Rs350 for eight hours and 80 km ( 50 miles ) to Rs500 for an air-conditioned car. For out-of-town travel, there is a per km charge, usually around Rs3-4 per km in the plains ( Rs6 in the hills ), with an overnight charge of around Rs100.

The local yellow-top black taxis are metered, but with constant hikes in fuel prices, charges may often be higher than indicated on the meter. If so, this will be prominently stated in the taxi and the driver will have a card showing the excess over the meter reading that can be legitimately charged.

Make sure the meter is "down" before you embark.

There is often a night surcharge of 10 percent between 11pm and 6am and a rate of Rs1 to Rs2 per piece of baggage.

Rickshaws

Auto rickshaws are supposed to use a meter. You should insist on this and get out if they refuse. Meter rates are subject to periodic changes, and extras for late night journeys etc. The drivers should have a card with the rates.

In popular tourist spots, during rush hour and bad weather, you might find it impossible to persuade the driver to use the meter. A tactic that might work is to offer "meter plus five". If not, you'll have to negotiate the fare.

Rickshaws are not allowed into central Mumbai and the only option is to use either the well developed bus service, or the reasonably priced taxis.

The fare is about half that of taxis. Do not forget to ensure that the meter is flagged down to the minimum fare.
