August, September and October is typhoon season, which can make travel in to some islands difficult. Spring, March to May, and autumn, September to November, in Japan are comparable mild. Rainfall is relatively low and the days are often clear. These are, without a doubt, the very best times to visit the country.

Osaka

Osaka has two airports, Osaka Itami Airport (ITM), which handles only domestic traffic, and the newer Kansai International Airport (KIX), which handles all international and some domestic flights. Itami is located right in Osaka itself while KIX is on an artificial island in Wakayama-ken.

Getting around

Tokyo

Walking

In this large city with such an efficient public transportation system, walking to get from point A to point B would seem a bit stupid at first glance. However, as the city is extremely safe even at night, walking in Tokyo can be a very pleasant experience. In some areas, walking can be much shorter than taking the subway and walking the transit (the whole Akasaka/Nagatacho/Roppongi area in the center is for instance very easily covered on foot). If you have the time, Shinjuku to Shibuya via Omotesando takes roughly one hour, Tokyo Station to Shinjuku would be a half a day walk, and the whole Yamanote line Grand Tour takes a long day.

Subway

Most subway train lines in Tokyo run from around 5:00AM to 1:00AM During peak hours they run about once every three minutes; even during off-peak hours it's less than ten minutes between trains.

Train

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4006.html

Tokyo (Tokyo and Shinagawa Stations) and Osaka (Shin-Osaka Station) are connected with each other by the JR Tokaido Shinkansen. Nozomi trains require about 155 minutes to reach Shin-Osaka Station from Tokyo, hikari trains about three hours and kodama trains about four hours.

The regular one way fare is 13,240 yen by non-reserved seat on any train, around 13,700 yen by reserved seat on hikari or kodama trains and around 14,000 yen by reserved seat on a nozomi train. A 7-day Japan Rail Pass costs about the same as regular round trip tickets. The Japan Rail Pass is valid on hikari and kodama trains, but not on nozomi trains.

With the "Hikari Hayatoku Kippu", you can travel between Tokyo and Osaka by reserved seat on a hikari train for only 12,000 yen, but the ticket has to purchased at least one week in advance.

With the "Puratto Kodama Economy Plan", you can travel between Tokyo and Osaka by reserved seat on a kodama train for only 10,000 yen, but the plan has to be purchased at least one day in advance.
