Try to get a window seat if you are flying into Phuket International Airport - the sights are simply unforgettable. Aircraft flying in from the east follow an approach path that's smack-bang right over Phang Nga Bay and its graphic limestone karsts, isolated green islets and multihued fishing boats. At both high and low tide the bay is a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of colours and contours.

4 hours is recommended according to Johanna/Finnair in case the plane arrives late at Bangkok.

The airport is situated in the north of the island some 40 minutes' drive from Patong Beach.

A well-signed taxi stand is located just outside, to the right of the main building. The taxis are red and yellow and are supposed to use their meters but you will probably have to insist that the driver turns his meter on instead of bargaining and haggling for a price.

The average fare from the airport to Patong is 550 baht.

Tickets for minivans are for sale at two counters on the ground floor ( Patong 150 baht ). Minivans sometimes stop off at tour agencies where you will be asked to book a tour from which the driver makes a commission. Minivans take longer than a taxi to deliver you to your hotel as they drop off other passengers at hotels along the way.

Med början i oktober 2005 började en flygbuss sin verksamhet i Phuket och erbjuder för första gången ett verkligt billigt sätt att ta sig till och från flygplatsen. Från Phuket Bus Terminal på Phang Nga Road i Phuket City, gör bussen 13 dagliga avgångar 5,00-18,30. Från flygplatsen sker avgångar med regelbundna intervaller mellan 6,30 och 20,45. Det finns åtta hållplatser längs vägen, och priset varierar 15-85 Baht beroende på resans längd.

When you go up to the departures lounge make sure the driver resets the meter and it shows 35 baht before you set off. It's been known for them to leave the meter running whist they wait.

If the cabbie tries to cheat you, do the same. I like to take a pic of the rear license plate first before entering the cab and make sure he sees me.

There is a daytime bus service (songthew) to most parts of the island. All the busses run in a loop from Phuket town to the destination and then back to Phuket town again. The bus terminal in Phuket town is at the food market (talad sod) they park along this one way road. If you are planning to go with the bus then all you got to do is locate the right bus (all of them have signs on their destination) and enter the bus.

The buses run until 6 a clock in the evening and start in the morning. This is a much safer way to travel around the island then the Tuk-Tuk is and at the same time very sheep way to travel. You get to see allot from the bus and can stop it at any time to get off!

There are no bus stops in Phuket! All you need to do is go to the road where the bus passes and wave with your hand when it comes. You climb on and the bus continues the trip. You pay either to the driver or to the "money collector" when he comes and the price is around 15-25 THB / person depending on destination.

Traveling by bus to and from Phuket is cheap and a good way to travel. Some of the bus trips is day time and offers you a chance to see the country.

 

Patong beach is a 2 km strip of golden sand. The northern part of Patong Beach hides a beautiful small sandy creek where water is very shallow and clear during high season. The southern part, near the bridge, is the mouth of a river where several fishing boats anchor. The other side of the bridge leads to a small fisherman village. Some good snorkeling? can be found by the rocks at the north end of the beach.

De lokala bussarna är oftast orange eller blå, de större luftkonditionerade Bangkokbussarna är i regel vita.

 

De sista kilometerna före Khaolak centrum består av slingrande bergsväg 
där det inte finns någon bebyggelse. När vägen sedan blir rak igen öppnar 
den upp sig i flera körfält och det finns hus på båda sidor vägen. Du har 
då kommit till Khaolak centrum. Du kommer att bli avsläppt längs vägen då 
det inte finns någon egentlig busstation i Khaolak. Jag gissar att det är 
fler som går av där.

 

Det smidigaste är faktiskt att du går av i Khaolak istället, särskilt  om du har mer packning än en ryggsäck. I Khaolak kan du enkelt få tag  på en större taxi. Säg bara att du ska till Poseidon. Priset håller sig  runt 250 baht. I Taplamu finns bara motorcykeltaxi.

 

Ta buss från busstationen i Phuket stad mot Khao Lak och säg till att du vill gå av vid Thap Lamu och ta en motorcykel därifrån till Poseidon. Maybe local bus isn't going to Khao Lak.

Lokalbussen från Phuket kostade oss 200 baht/person. Bäst är det att köpa biljetten på busstationen i Phuket. Luras inte in i någon travelagency bara.

Khao Lak is on the main North-South route between Phuket and Bangkok. Bus service is plentiful and easy.

From Phuket Town bus terminal - the touts will happily assist you onto the next bus. No more than 200 baht for Air-con bus. About 2 hours for 1st class, 3+ hours for others. Departures from 0700-1800.

Daytour to Surin island

Turen vi tog till Surin kostade 2300 baht men den köpte vi vid ett litet stånd på huvudgatan nära ett minimarket, ett kafe. Det ligger på vänster sida om man går norrut och man ska gå förbi McDonalds och fortsätter säkert 600-700 meter, förbi supermarket(litet) och sen i riktning mot Dr någonting ett mini sjukhus med bara en doktor. Ståndet ligger bara där och erbjuder turer. De kan säkert ordna med övernattning också. Vi reste med ett företag som hette Pearl tours någonting och ägdes av Chris och Cher.

From the Airport, catch the airport Bus for 150 baht to Khao San Road.

 

Airport Express runs four useful routes between Suvarnabhumi and Bangkok. They operate from 5am to midnight and cost 150 THB. The Airport Express counter is near entrance 8 on level 1.

AE-2 to Banglamphu (by expressway) Via Th Petchaburi Soi 30, Democracy Monument, Royal Hotel, Th Phra Athit, Th Phra Sumen and Th Khao San.

Route AE2 airport - Khao san road is a last stop. When arrive at Khao san Rd. you have a police station on your left.Walk straight in to khao san rd. about 5 min.On your left you will see Khaosan Palace Hotel then 7-11 then Khaosan Centerpoint Hotel then Family Mart (Convenient Store) and our entrance is next to Family Mart , has a bangle and jewelry store in the front .Walk in to the alley about 20 meters.You will spot a yellow house in the back.

 

A metered taxi will cost around 300 Baht and add 50 baht for the Airport charge and 65 Baht for the Toll road (which you dont need late at night or early in the morning) MAKE SURE THEY PUT THE METER ON ! if not get another taxi!

General rule of thumb
1.) Always insist on using the meter, ask if they use meter - if they don't then try another taxi.
2.) Watch them turn the meter on after you get on - 35 baht starting rate
3.) Majority of taxi have a rate / kilometer card hanging from the front seat to check the displayed meter rate and correct published rate.
4.) When taking a taxi from the airport - follow the signs that say public taxi, it should be right outside of the terminal. You will have to line up to get a ticket stub, they will quote you a surcharge depending on the destination (within Bangkok city limits it should be 50 baht) they should not be quoting you a price for the ride.
5.) 50 baht additional surcharge if taking a taxi from the airport only - surcharge will increase if your destination is not within the Bangkok city limits - look at the published chart at the taxi counter where you get your ticket stub for the taxi, if its not shown on the counter - you can request them to show you.
6.) Expect to pass 2-3 toll roads going into town or going to the airport, this will add 60-90 baht on top of the displayed fare. This is standard practice.
7.) NEVER accept a tour offered by the taxi - you will be ripped off.
8.) Keep your ticket stub as it has the taxi info, you can call to complain if needed at a later time.
9.) Don't listen to strangers on the street if they offer to help or give you travel advice.
